Koshiki Karate World Championship 2009

The Koshiki Karate World Championship was held for the fifth time on 19 December 2009 in Fürstenwalde, Germany. The competition was held under the patronage of the World Koshiki Karate Union and Germany’s leading koshiki association, Deutscher Koshiki Karate Verband e.V., along with the association’s local wing from the German state of Brandenburg, the Koshiki Karate Fürstenwalde e.V. ( KKFe.V.).

A total of 80 athletes from Germany, Russia and the Ukraine took part in the matches held in the kata and kumite categories.

Referee seminar in Berlin

Günter Lehner from Austria’s Shaolin Linz Dojo travelled to Berlin to participate in a small-scale referee seminar. With an eye on the World Koshiki Karate Union World Championship in October 2011 in Berlin, Günter attended the seminar to get up to speed on the WKKU’s latest match rules and pass this information on to his Austrian athletes. We wish the Austrian national team all the best for the competition.

Instruction by Michel Laurin

Canada’s Michel Laurin, 9th Dan, provided instruction on the rules for the World Championship’s kumite competition. Familiarity with these rules is absolutely necessary for participation in international matches such as this year’s World Championship. Laurin’s presentation quickly revealed that up until now Koshiki Karate competitions have been held under broadly different sets of rules in different countries. The WKKU’s rules are clear on this issue, accommodating the vast majority of issues and requirements.
